How to Set Up Your LLC Step-by-Step for Content Creators
We are big fans of the LLC around here. This business structure, a Limited Liability Corporation, offers a lot of benefits for content creators. It provides a layer of protection for your personal assets, improves your privacy because you don’t have to share your social security number with platforms and others who pay you and sends a clear message to the IRS and potential brand partners that you are running a serious business.

If you’re ready to start using an LLC for your business, here are the steps you can take on how to set up your LLC.
Choose a Name
Since your privacy is important, we recommend avoiding a name that includes your real name. Instead, you can make one that plays off your name by using an element or your initials, or one that is completely unrelated to your personal information. You might consider a few variations, in case your first choice has already been taken.
Then you’ll want to search to see if anyone else is using that name for a similar business or a name that is similar enough that it might cause confusion.
- Is the URL available?
- How about social handles on platforms other than your primary one?
- Is the name already registered to someone else in your state? (Business names are typically registered with the state.)
- Are there any registered trademarks that use your business name or are similar enough that it might cause a legal issue?
- Is the name memorable and easy to say and type?
File Paperwork with your State
The Secretary of State’s office typically handles business registrations. Most state websites offer step-by-step instructions, and some have online fillable forms. Provide the information they ask for — this information will serve as your articles of organization. You’ll need to know who is involved in the business (and yes, it can be just you), the mailing and physical addresses, the business purpose, and other information, which may vary by state.
There will likely be a fee involved with filing these articles of organization, and you may also need to file for a business license with your state, county, or city.
Once you’ve paid any required fees and submitted the forms, you just wait for the articles of organization to be approved. This process can take days or weeks. Filing online typically offers faster approval.
Request an EIN
The IRS provides businesses with an employer identification number (EIN). You use this number instead of your personal social security number on business and payment agreements with your content platforms and any brand partners you work with. You also use this number if you hire employees, pay sales taxes, and for other business needs.
You can request this number for free on the IRS’s website. You will receive the EIN immediately once your request is verified. Make sure you save your EIN documentation so you don’t forget the number. It can be time-consuming to have the IRS look it up for you later.
Open a Business Bank Account
When you open a business account, you will need to provide proof that you’ve taken the steps above to create a business entity. You will likely need to give the bank your EIN, and you may need to provide copies of the documents from the state approving your LLC and your business license. The bank may require other paperwork, too.
Using a business account instead of a personal account for business needs can allow your business to process more transactions than a personal account allows (and may make it much easier to accept credit card payments), may provide higher interest rates on savings, and can help you build a solid financial history for your business so you can apply for business credit if needed in the future. It also provides yet another signal that your business is completely separate from your personal assets.
